Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language

Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language

This accredited course is ideal for adults aged 19+ who want to learn the basics of British Sign Language and develop the skills to communicate with Deaf people in everyday situations. Over 30 weeks, you’ll cover a range of practical topics, from fingerspelling to everyday conversations, while also gaining valuable insight into Deaf awareness and culture.

You’ll study three core units:

  • Introduction to BSL
Learn fingerspelling, numbers, basic everyday signs, and how to exchange simple personal information.

  • Conversational BSL
Develop skills for everyday communication in familiar settings, such as at home, asking and answering questions, and describing people, animals, and objects.

  • Communication in BSL About Everyday Life
Explore topics including work, school, leisure, weather, transport, and daily routines, building confidence in both receptive (understanding) and productive (signing) skills.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a strong foundation in BSL and the confidence to use it in real-life situations. This qualification is also a valuable stepping stone towards Level 2 and beyond.
