Core Skills
Our Core Skills curriculum focuses on building essential skills that support learning, independence, and future opportunities. It includes:
Maths – developing practical number skills for everyday life, such as using money, measuring, and calculating.
English – improving reading, writing, and understanding to support communication and independence.
ICT – gaining confidence with digital tools and technology to support learning and prepare for the modern world.
Communication – building skills in speaking, listening, and interacting effectively with others.
Problem Solving – learning to think critically, make decisions, and apply strategies to overcome challenges.
All students are assessed when they join us to ensure they’re placed on the most appropriate learning pathway for their individual needs. We provide tailored support throughout their time with us, with regular progress reviews to ensure their development stays on track. These reviews are guided by each student’s current learning requirements and individual EHCP targets.

Maths and English are delivered across the curriculum in a range of contexts, as well as through timetabled weekly sessions. Study is based on the functional skills syllabus but we recognise that all students will achieve progress at their own rate. We therefore offer in house progress certificates, short course unit specific accreditations (ASDAN) and entry level functional skills awards.
