Backgroundgranny was a brothel keeper
Kate has been running a family history research partnership since 2008 with her friend Toni Neobard and another friend, Colin Piggott. During that time, Kate and Toni identified that there was a gap in the market for a book for people who wanted to start researching their own family tree, but were put off by the seriousness of the existing books out there. Most family history books are very factual, often very weighty, but light in humour.

They wanted to produce something that would appeal to everyone. So they have used stories from their own families and those of our clients to show the ways in which the novice researcher can get it wrong, and have offered hints and tips on how to get it right. They have included cartoons which have been drawn up by a talented young local artist called Jim Wilkins.

This book, and its companion: Grandad was a Dwarf Strangler: 50 More Family History Traps, has taken some three years from conception to publication. They have had good support from the publishing company, The Family History Partnership. As their name suggests, they specialise in publishing family history books, and currently their book appears at pride of place on their home page www.thefamilyhistorypartnership.com. As you can imagine, it's incredibly exciting for Kate to be a published author and to see her name on the front cover of her own book!

The Future
"Grandad" is about to start the editing process and the cartoon illustrations for this are being drawn up by Jim, and we hope to publish this around April 2014.  Kate and Toni are not resting on their laurels - apart from continuing family history research, and preparing the next book for publication, they are also writing a murder mystery play to be acted out by a group of local amateur actors as a fundraising event for her local community association. Somehow she manages to squeeze in her work for SACC . . . .

How to buy the book

If anyone wishes to buy the book, they can go direct to the Family History Partnership website. It can also be found on Amazon and Kate and Toni also have some copies for sale. At present it is not stocked in bookshops but they can order it in for you. It retails at £8.99 but if you obtain it from Amazon or the publishers there is P&P on top of this.
