Background Information:

Southend Adult Community College’s (SACC) involvement with the Leigh Art Trail (LAT) began over ten-years ago.

Yvonne Pedretti, SACC’s Curriculum Manager for Arts and Crafts at the time, was herself a LAT artist and developed the relationship between the Art Trail and college. Since her passing this work has been continued by Head of Arts Tricia North.

Participation in the Art Trail has raised the aspirations of learners’ by making the creative and artistic process of exhibiting their own work to an audience as part of a group exhibition a reality, not a pipe-dream.

Over a hundred learners have showcased their pieces in a wide range of mediums throughout the ten-years. Firstly, at SACC’s former centre at the Leigh Community Centre and now at its new specialist adult education wing at the Belfairs Academy, Highlands Boulevard.

For the last five-years, art tutors have nominated learners for the Leigh Art Trail Award. This Award recognises learners who have shown outstanding talent. The award winner is then mentored and supported by college staff to create a body of work especially to be shown at a solo exhibition within the Art Trail.

The 2016 winner Jules Hart was nominated by Art Tutor David Crawford who said “Jules was nominated for the Leigh Art Trail prize because her work, mainly in mixed media, has consistently progressed, with a natural sense of colour and strong experimentation with materials. She has also sold work at a variety of art fairs, so I knew putting on an exhibition would not be a daunting prospect for her”.

The College has a wide range of arts and crafts courses for all abilities starting in September 2017, if you would further information, please call 01702 445700 or visit www.southend-adult.ac.uk
