GSCE English Language

About the course

The GCSE English Language syllabus offers a wide range of opportunities to improve skills in reading, writing and oral communication.

Assessment is through controlled assessment in the first two terms and one examination unit to be taken in June.

Subjects covered

Unit 1: understanding and Producing non fiction texts
External examination = 40% of total GCSE marks, 2 hours
Section A: Reading
Section B: Writing

Unit 2: Speaking and Listening
Controlled assessment = 20% of total GCSE marks.
Oral assessment will comprise of individual contribution, group discussions and role play.

Unit 3: Understanding and producing creative texts.
Controlled assessment = 40% of total GCSE marks, this will include 6-8 hours controlled assessment.
Part A:  Understanding creative texts (literary: 3 tasks to be submitted; reading Shakespeare, prose and poetry).
Part B:  Producing creative texts.  2 tasks to be submitted.
Part C:  Spoken language study; one written task to be submitted.
